THE QUESTIONAIRE…
1. What do you understand by the term fetishism?
Being phsyically and mentally stimulated by various aspects of people and the outside world that are more particular in their design and meaning.
2.What does “fetish” mean to you?
Adventure and exploration.
3. Do you have a fetish?
A few yes. I think everyone had their own ‘fetish’ whether it be the curve of an ankle, or being spoken to in a stern way. Everyone has some quirk or small aspect of life that stimulates and arouses them, it’s just that the majority of people usually never explore these to their furthest extent.
4. Would you consider yourself a fetishist?
Of course.
5. Would you say there are any links between fetishism and “mental illness”?
I think that people with any affliction or gift that allows their mind to work in a different capacity are probably more likely to explore their fetishes, but this is not solely constricted to those with mental illnesses.
6. What do you understand by the term “mental illness”?
An affliction of the mind that causes a person a negative or hindered experience of life.
7. What do you think of the term “pervert”?
I think it can be applied in a number of ways. The most commonly used however is that of someone who applies their sexual desires on others in a more forceful and less mutually agreeable fashion.
8. Would you consider yourself a “pervert”?
I would consider myself a sexual deviant, not a pervert. It is loaded with negative connotations and I never try to explore or force anything upon anyone without their consent.
9. What is your view on Freud? (Sigmund)
Intelligent chap, nice beard, probably breast fed for too long.
10. What relationship do you think fetishism has to obsession?
I think that obsession can be a form of fetish. To lust after your own personal ‘zahir’ as it were, is a form of stimulation in itself.
11. Would you consider yourself to be obsessive?
With regards to certain aspects of life, very much so.
12. Would you consider yourself to be a control freak?
I like control, and I also like losing control. I am very attached to my ability to do both of these things but I do not obsess over it.
13. What is control?
Control is the ability to take command and a powerful tool applied daily in everyones’ lives. To ascertain how to take control and also relinquish it is one of the most powerful accolades a person can possess.
14. What do you think the relationship is between fetishism and control?
As with obsession they form part of each other. Controlling someone or allowing yourself to be controlled is a fetish.
15. Would you say you had any form of obsessive compulsive disorder?
Yes.
16. Would you say fetishism is a control disorder?
No.
17. How does fetishism relate to popular culture?
As society systematically bores itself and thus dives deeper into the world of taboo, fetishism will become so common place it may well lose it’s ‘niché’ meaning.
18. What would you say the difference is between sexual and psychological fetishism is?
I think they are interlinked. There is a pyschological aspect to all sexual fetishism. However, I suppose psychological fetishism can exist independantly of the sexual.
19. What is your opinion on voyeurism and scopophilia?
I adore the art of voyeurism and I am afraid I don’t know what scopophilia is. However I shall look it up!
20. Are you a voyeur?
Yes.
21. Are ALL humans voyeurs by nature?
Yes. The art of taking in your surroundings is voyeurism in itself.
22. Are you an exhibitionist?
Very much so yes.
23. What do you think the relatonship is between voyeurism and exhibitionism?
They can repel and attract each other. Some people enjoy being watched, observed and documented, others do not, some people enjoy watching those who exhibit themselves in a more pronounced fashion, others do not.
24. Is there a type of person do you think, who is A) an exhibitonist and B) a voyeur?
I believe we are all voyeurs of differing degrees. As Shakespeare voices in As You Like It ‘All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players’. So too do we all strut our hour upon this stage and to what degree and with what merits we decide to witness the performance is up to the individual. As is the level of performance given by the ‘players’. Exhibitionists merely strike out to be witnessed.
25. What do people interested in fetishism have in common in your opinion?
A desire to explores the intricacies of what stimulates them mentally and phsyically.
26. Are all artists voyeurs?
Not necessarily, however those who share their art certainly are.
27. Are you a voyeur for “looking at” art?
In my opinion yes.
28. Is ALL photography/film a form of voyeurism?
I would say so.
29. What is the difference between “looking” and being a voyeur?
None. However, as society deems the two to be different, I suppose to be a voyeur is to take pleasure in the ‘looking’ and to assess what is being looked at.
30. Are all film makers/photographers voyeurs?
Again, I believe so yes.
31. What place do you think voyeurism has in popular culture?
It is popular culture. It is all of culture.
32. What place do you think control has in A) the individual, and B) in popular culture?
What a controlling questionnaire! I think control can determine an individuals life experiences and their involvement within popular culture.
