Papa… an ode to my grandfather R.I.P
So old boy the time had come,
To close your eyes and it be done,
And as angels grasp your soul to heaven,
Your heart, your life, all remembered then.
You stood proud and you stood strong,
Through all your rights and all the wrongs,
And even with your poise and calm,
I felt your love amidst your arms.
Whilst just a lad you fought to be free,
A horrendous time for a young man to see,
Through skies so red your crew would fly,
Above bloodied seas, more red than the sky.
And when truth won out and justice was served,
You came home to your love, to my Nana, to her,
And all war’s atrocities melted and were gone,
Just love was left from your chosen one.
And two great lads you raised and loved,
Both blessings to you sent from above,
They became great men and made your proud,
All this you saw before death’s shroud.
And old boy, grandchildren you had, five,
Felt your warmth while you were alive,
You imparted knowledge, love and support,
And some sporting tips too on field or court.
But as all good cricketers duly note,
All good innings must end though,
And yours was glorious, happy and long,
You’re flown now to heaven with even’ song.
So old boy we send out love,
As you depart to rest above,
Proud of me, shown love by you,
Well Papa my dearest, I’m proud of you too.
